Pride and Humility

Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom.

Pride is a killer.  Pride elevates ourselves over others.  When we are prideful, we miss those who are hurting and weak.  They are people God wants us to speak up for.  Throughout the Scriptures, God tells us to take care of the orphans and widows.  We miss them when are full of pride.  For when we are prideful, we cannot take our eyes off ourselves.  We are consumed with only meeting our needs and not the needs of others.  Pride makes a fool.

Humility makes us wise and able to see others around us.  It allows us to see their hurts and pains, and then help them with it.  When we are humble, we stop focusing only on ourselves and we learn more.  We are more teachable.  We are open to learning from other people.  We realize that we do not know everything and that we have a lot to learn from others.

God wants us to be humble, especially before Him.  A prideful heart cannot easily be shaped.  A humble heart allows the potter to shape us.  God can do a lot with a humble heart, but not so much with a prideful one.

Dear God, help me to be humble.  Help me to have my eyes off myself and be able to see those around me who need help.  My nature calls me to be prideful.  I need Your help and strength to be humble.  Thank you for Your strength You give and the patience You have with me.  Amen.
