Proverbs 10:12 Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all transgressions.
In the tenth chapter of Proverbs, each verse is filled with contrasting values. They compare the wise and the fool. This verse compares hatred and love. When we hate someone, we blow the pettiest of things into a war. A little disagreement, becomes a major issue. The hatred blinds us to what exactly is going on and we do not have the proper perspective. Just seeing that other person, enrages us. We are bitter and Satan has a huge foothold into our lives (Ephesians 4:26-27). Even though the following statement sounds like a ‘duh’ statement, it needs to be said. Nothing good comes out of hating somebody. We must forgive them and move on.
The contrasting attitude of hate of course is love. When we love somebody we give them grace. We easily forgive them. We overlook faults that they have. We use wise words to smooth a hard situation. We make peace quickly with other people and the devil has not foothold into our lives.
We can see an example of hatred and love by looking at Abigail in 1 Samuel 25. She was married to a man named Nabal. He was as his name meant, a fool. David and his men had protected the man’s sheep and shepherds in the wilderness. Nabal refused to pay David and his men back good for his kindness. This enraged David and filled him with hatred. Him and his men mounted up and rode to confront Nabal, but before he could get there he was met with love. Abigail was that love. She heard how foolish her husband had been and prepared a ton of food and rode to meet David on the way. Her wisdom covered the transgression of her husband and she spared his life…for a few days. For God had enough of Nabal and his days ended ten days later. Her wisdom and love, covered the transgression of her husband and saved many lives. Her husband and David were spreading strife, but she brought peace to the situation.
Dear God, I thank you for the example of Abigail. How we can see her love covering the transgression of Nabal and in doing say saved many lives. Help me not to be filled with hatred, but instead filled with love and grace. May I bring peace to hot situations. Help me to be a blessing to others, and in do so bring glory to Your name. Thank you for Your grace which saves me and forgives me. It truly is an amazing grace, which I do not deserve. Amen.
