God vs Idols

Psalm 115:3-8
3 But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, The work of man’s hands. 5 They have mouths, but they cannot speak; They have eyes, but they cannot see; 6 They have ears, but they cannot hear; They have noses, but they cannot smell; 7 They have hands, but they cannot feel; They have feet, but they cannot walk; They cannot make a sound with their throat. 8 Those who make them will become like them, Everyone who trusts in them.

The one true God lives in Heaven.  He is able to do whatever He wants.  An idol, a fake god, is made by man and can only do what man makes it to.  The one true God lives, the idol is dead.  God has power, the idol has none.  Nobody made God, but idols are made by mankind.  Some have features, such as eyes, noses, ears, hands and feet, but they do not do anything.  They are just an object that sits there.  The one true God, is all knowing, all powerful, and present all over the place.  His features work.  He has eyes to see, a nose to smell, ears to hear, hands to hold, and feet to move.  Idols are an intimation, God is real and authentic.

Verse 8 says that everyone who trusts in idols will be like them,  They are dead and useless.  They provide no real function.  They waste their time worshiping something that they themselves had made.  They are fools.

Wait before you condemn these people who worship idols.  We need to look into the mirror.  We all have idols that we worship and spend time with instead of God.  Sure, they probably are not a statue.  However, an idol is anything we worship other than God.  We all have them.  For some of us it’s sports or a TV show.  Others its people or money.  The most common one is self.  We are all good at worshiping ourselves.  We need to check our own hearts and find what is keeping us from only worshiping the one true God.  Take some time and examine what in your life, you are focusing on more than God.  Then take steps to rid yourself of it.  Most if not all of the revivals in the Old Testament happened after the idols were destroyed.  We have to be careful to not let anything come between us and God.  If we do not deal with idols in our lives, we will be rendered useless and not be used by Him.

Dear God, help me to examine my life so that I may see what idols I have in it.  Help me and embolden me to get rid of these things.  Forgive me for having things in my life, which distract You from being number one.  Help me to be on guard against these things.  Thank you for being the one true God.  How foolish we are to worship something we make.  Help me to be wise and only worship You.  Amen.
