Perceiving Satisfaction

Ecclesiastes 2:10-11
10 All that my eyes desired I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, for my heart was pleased because of all my labor and this was my reward for all my labor. 11 Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labor which I had exerted, and behold all was vanity and striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun.

We as a society, think having more will bring satisfaction.  We look to the rich and famous and desire to have their lives.  We think how happy we would be, if only we had more money, or more success, or more things.  It just does not work that way.  So many people have tried to find satisfaction in those areas only to end up with a tragic end.  How many celebrities do we think have the perfect life, only to find out they are so miserable and turn to drugs and alcohol for help.  A lot of comics are miserable and depressed.

Today brings news of another tragic end.  Aaron Hernandez killed himself in prison this morning.  A few years ago he had it all.  One of the top tight ends in all of football, making a lot of money.  People looked up to him and loved him.  Was he finding satisfaction in life?  No.  He killed two people and got a life sentence in prison.  Just last week he was found not guilty of killing two other people.  Last night he hung himself in his cell.

Deon Sanders thought winning a Super Bowl would bring him satisfaction.  Instead, it only brought him more emptiness.  He said he tried to end it all, but thankfully he failed at it.

Fame and fortune do not satisfy.  It is like putting a square in a circle hole.  True satisfaction in life comes from one place and that is God.  Only God can fill the God shaped hole we have, for that is the way He designed it.  As Solomon found out many years ago, everything but God fails to satisfy us and is all vanity.  It is all worthless without God.  Sanders found this out.  After failing to kill himself, he turned to Jesus and found what he was looking for.

Do not let your life end tragically.  God is calling out to you and pursuing you.  Reach out to Him and let Him satisfy you.  Jesus died that you might be forgiven and He wants to have a relationship with you.  Only that can truly satisfy the God shaped hole.
