7 The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether.
These verses contain six different items that are “of the Lord”. Lets take a brief look at each one.
First, it mentions the law. It says that it is perfect and restores us. God’s Law is unchanging, for since God is perfect His law is as well. There is nothing in the law that needs to be changed. Our laws in this country are constantly changing, because men make laws that are flawed and sometimes laws are made for corrupt reasons. God’s laws are not corrupt but for our best. When we follow God’s law we are free to live the life God wants us to live.
Second, David mentions that the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the simple. What God says is true, none of His word is false. It is as simple as that.
Third, David mentions the precepts of the Lord, the rules for regulating our thoughts. If we think the way God wants us to think, our hearts are filled with joy. It is when our minds wonder away from that, we find trouble. We need to (I need to) meditate on God’s word and not the garbage of this world. Garbage in Garbage out.
Fourth, His commandments are pure and help us to see better. He is not an oppressive God, instead following His commandments are freeing. They help us see what is right and what is wrong.
Fifth, David mentions the fear of The Lord. He says it is clean and enduring forever. If we live our lives in fear of God, we will live a clean life. The fear of the Lord, is not something we do well now days. I believe we do not fear God as much as we should now days. Fearing God is giving Him reverence for who is. We see God as a loving God, which He is, but we do not always focus on what His Holiness means. He cannot stand our sin, it is offensive to Him. If not for Jesus and His sacrifice, all mankind would deservedly be thrown into Hell. The Bible says (Psalm 111:10,Proverbs 1:7,Proverbs 9:10) that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. If you want to be wise, fear God.
Sixth and last, is the judgement of the Lord. David says that they are true and righteous. As I mentioned above, God is just in bringing judgement. He is a Holy God and the creator of all. We all deserve His judgement. We have no standing before this Great Judge. We have no case to plea. There is no justification that we can give to earn a not guilty judgement on our own. It is a simple case, we are all guilty before God. Our only hope is Jesus and thanks be to God, when we accept Him by faith, we are forgiven. He is our only hope to stand before this Holy judge. His righteousness is imputed on to us, so when God sees us, He sees Jesus. That is our only hope!
God’s way is best. Let us all do it His way!
