Advent Calendar Day 20 – King Herod

Matthew 2:16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.

King Herod was a ruthless man.  When he heard a new King of the Jews was born, he was determined to kill the child. He lied to the Magi, saying he wanted to know where the child was so he could come worship Him.  He had only the intention of murder not worship.  When the Magi went home a different way, without telling Herod where the child was, he was enraged and murdered every boy under 2 years old in Bethlehem.  Jeremiah had predicted this would happen in chapter 31.

What do we make of this and how does it fit into the Christmas story?  Well, it is important to realized that even from birth, Jesus was opposed.  Satan knew why He was born and tried at all costs to stop Him.  He worked through Herod to accomplish this.  Satan is still working hard today to removed the knowledge of Jesus.  Opposition to the Christ child is nothing new.  Opposition to Jesus is nothing new.  But know, that Jesus has overcome any opposition.  He is the winner.  Ruthless men like Herod can do nothing to thwart God!

There are enemies in the Christmas story, but Jesus has overcome them.  In Him is victory!
