Luke 2:1 Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth.
How little did the Emperor of Rome, Caesar Augustus, know that when he ordered a census be taken, that he was really helping to fulfill a prophecy. As we talked about a few days ago, the prophet Micah had predicted that the Messiah was to be born in town of Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth, about 70 miles north of Bethlehem (See Map), quite the journey for them to get there. How would God make this prophecy come true? We can find the answer by reading Proverbs 21:1.
1 The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD; He turns it wherever He wishes
Even the most powerful person in the world, is nothing in the hand of God. He caused Augustus to call for a census and not only that but he had them register in their ancestral home town. Meaning that Joseph and Mary, both descendants of King David needed to travel to Bethlehem, his hometown, to register. And all this took place at the right time for her to give birth while they were there. Aha! the sovereignty of God at work in the Christmas story! He moves people into the right places, at the right time. How wonderful God is!
When you think through the Christmas story, do not miss that God is in charge of the whole story! He is Sovereign!
