24 After these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant, and she kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying, 25 “This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to take away my disgrace among men.”
After Zechariah goes home, God fulfills His promise through Gabriel and his wife Elizabeth gets pregnant. Notice that the Bible never says that Elizabeth doubted. Sarah, when she was told that she would have Isaac late in life laughed and was rebuked for it. Elizabeth instead embraces it and praised God.
She seemed sensitive to God’s work. Later in the chapter, a now pregnant Mary would come visit her. Immediately notices John, in her womb, leap for joy at the sound of Mary’s voice, the mother of her Lord. Verse 41 says that she was “filled with the Holy Spirit” when Mary came. Her walk with the Lord was good and she was open to His great works.
Elizabeth teaches us to accept the wonder of the Christmas story. Open your mind today to the wonders!
