Daniel 5:20 “But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit became so proud that he behaved arrogantly, he was deposed from his royal throne and his glory was taken away from him.”
Daniel 5:22 “Yet you, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, even though you knew all this.”
In verse 20, Daniel is referring to Nebuchadnezzar, the great king of Babylon. The story is told in Daniel 4. God warned him in a dream to humble himself or he would driven away and live for a period of time like an animal. Nebuchadnezzar refused to and was driven away to live in the wilderness. After the allotted period of time, Nebuchadnezzar came to his senses and he humbled himself and gave glory to God. Fast forward a number of years, and Belshazzar, his grandson was on the throne. He was having a wild party, and was missing (or trying to ignore) the fact that Babylon would fall that very night, as the Medes and Persians would sneak into the city. Belshazzar knew all that his Grandfather went through, yet he was refused to humble himself.
How many people do we know that have gone through tough times after refusing to humble themselves, yet we still repeat their same mistakes. The Bible is full of stories of people failing to follow God, even though they should know better. Learn from others and don’t repeat their mistake. Humble yourself before your God!
